It’s time for my May 2026 Income Report, and I do these income reports every single month to break down how much the business made, how much we spent, and all the lessons learned along the way. I do them for myself – so I have a reason to really look at what happened and reflect on it and learn from it.
And I do them for you, because the way we think about money and pricing and spending and inflow and outflow in your business really influences whether you create wanted or unwanted results.
May was one of my lowest revenue months in a long time – and also one of the best months I've had in a long time. Let’s dive in.
How May Started: A Different Kind of Energy
If you listened to my April 2026 income report, you know I had a health situation that forced me to make some big changes. I came back from our team retreat having decided to stop playing not to lose and start playing to win. And by the time May rolled around, I felt genuinely different. Calmer. More focused. Some of that might be the beta blocker I'm on (which I've been reading about and think it might blocking the adrenaline-driven fear response that used to make it easy to stay in overdrive). Some of it is just… I made a decision to stop making decisions from fear.
The very first day of May, I had lunch with Whitney Rose of WildHive Studio, a web designer here in Columbus, Ohio who teaches a condensed one week web design process. We connected after she spoke at the Simply Profitable Designer Summit, and it was one of those conversations where you're like, “I wish we were recording this!” I’ll have her on the podcast soon so you can hear more about her work.
That same weekend, I flew to Asheville, North Carolina to speak at the Scaling Summit Retreat hosted by Kenzie and Marissa from the Brief Collective. I walked a room full of web designers and graphic designers through our Next Level Framework – what we use inside the Next Level Mastermind to help women web designers who already have a successful business on paper figure out what's keeping them from the next level of growth. Not re-engineer their whole business. Not follow someone else's model. Find their own unique path to unstuck.
After I presented, Kenzie and Marissa and I ended up in this amazing conversation about marketing without social media, which I know is basically the taboo thing to say out loud, but it's genuinely how we teach marketing inside the Web Designer Academy and the Next Level Mastermind. We don't teach social media marketing as a primary strategy. Relationship marketing – connecting with real people who can open real doors – is what we teach.
And May was honestly a masterclass in why.
The Outreach Email That Snowballed
Mid-May, I started doing outreach for something new I'm beta testing: a Package Matrix™ certification program. The Package Matrix™ Method is the pricing strategy at the core of everything I teach – the end-to-end system that takes you from consultation to close, centered on packaging your offers based on outcomes rather than deliverables or time. I've been teaching it inside the Web Designer Academy for years, but I'm now expanding it to serve freelancers, consultants, coaches, and other service providers over at https://shannonmattern.com/
My friend Jason Gracia of Million Dollar Websites told me at a conference over a year ago that I should license Package Matrix™. Another business friend told me her clients needed it and she wanted to be certified to teach it.
And so this spring I finally committed to start looking for people to start beta testing a certification at a significant discount in exchange for their time, participation, and feedback.
So I sent four outreach emails. The first was to Austin Church – he's been on this podcast before, runs Freelance Cake, and hosts the Advanced Freelancer Summit.
We're genuinely friends. I reached out to see if he knew anyone in his network who might be a good fit for the certification beta. He told me he was deep in summit prep but happy to chat after. And then I added, “Hey, if you have a gap in your speaker lineup and need someone to talk about pricing strategy, I'd love to help.”
He wrote back immediately: “What would be a grand slam for you?”
What a generous question, from a genuinely good human. I told him exactly which day I'd fit in, what I'd talk about, and that I'd get him everything done in two days. He said yes. I presented. I got in front of exactly the audience I'd been building ShannonMattern.com for. And then someone else who spoke at the same summit and has an audience of 100,000 freelancers – reached out and invited me to speak at his conference in August.
Of the other three outreach emails I sent, I haven't heard back. And that's okay. I tell the women inside the Web Designer Academy and the Next Level Mastermind this all the time: you only need one person who can open the right door. Think smaller than you think you need to. It's not about sending 500 cold emails. It's about genuinely connecting with the right people – and then actually asking.
We have a whole framework for this inside the Web Designer Academy called the Just Ask Framework, and it's one of the most underestimated tools in our marketing module. It's simple, it's not salesy, and it creates opportunities you couldn't have planned for.
What a Half Marathon Taught Me About Sales
May 19th, my sister and I flew to Barcelona. I've never been to Europe. I've never crossed the Atlantic.
And I left my laptop at home. My sister, my husband – they both told me not to bring it. My sister straight up told me: “Everyone waits on you when you bring your laptop.” I'm always the last one out the door because I'm trying to finish “just one more thing.” So I left it behind. And yes, I felt the urgency of everything I “should” be doing. But I made myself sit with that feeling, and what I realized was that the urgency itself was the problem – not the work.
We joined a group of about 50 people doing the Mindful Marathon along the Costa Brava – a series of footpaths along the coast of Spain. The half marathon route was 13 miles of stunning coastline… and stairs. So many stairs. Up stairs, down stairs, steep trails, flat stretches through little towns, and then more stairs. At every set of seemingly endless steps, I heard other people saying they were tired of the steps, that they couldn't do it.
And it literally never occurred to me I couldn’t.
Just one foot in front of the other. I couldn't skip any of the steps. I didn't know what was around the corner. I just had to trust and keep walking.
Somewhere in those 13 miles, I started connecting that to my business. Specifically to the story I've been telling myself for years that I'm “bad at sales.” I have 10+ years of revenue that should argue against that belief, but my brain has been clinging to it and I've been spending enormous energy trying to solve a problem that might not actually exist. What if I just… stopped believing it? What if I walked into every sales conversation the way I walked 13 miles of stairs in Spain – assuming I was going to get to the top, not knowing what was around the corner, one foot in front of the other – never believing for a moment that I couldn’t?
I came home from Spain with 13 miles of walking under my belt, a thoroughly stiff body, and something that felt a lot like a new belief.
May 2026 by the Numbers
Inflow: $11,489
All recurring revenue from Web Designer Academy and Next Level Mastermind payment plans. No new enrollments in May. My lowest revenue month in 18 months.
Outflow: $17,096
This covers my salary, Erica's salary, podcast production, our conversion rate optimization investment, all our software subscriptions, website hosting, Circle, email marketing, payment processing, business insurance, accounting – the full cost of running the business at the level we run it. This is about normal, around $17-20K depending on the month.
Drawn from reserves: $6,905
As I watched that reserve balance drop, I noticed something interesting: I didn't feel the panic I would have felt six months ago. I felt clear. Not because I was ignoring the situation – I was very much looking at it – but because I was making decisions from a place of “what can I do?” rather than “what if everything falls apart?”
What the Rolling Data Actually Shows
Here's something I want you to hear, especially if you're in a slower month right now:
When I look at my rolling six-month averages, here's what I see: December 2024 to May 2025, average inflow was $22,000 a month. June to November 2025, it was $27,000. December 2025 to May 2026, it's $21,582. So yes, May was the lowest single month I've had since November 2024. But the six-month average is basically where it was a year ago.
I plant seeds in the first half of the year – summits, collaborations, relationships – and they bear fruit in the second half. That's just how I've been doing this, and the data confirms it works.
So instead of panicking, I looked at what I could do differently. I asked myself: if the Web Designer Academy isn't generating new enrollment revenue fast enough to sustain the investment I'm putting into it, what else do I have that can?
The Email That Changed June
At the end of May – technically May 29th – I sent an email to my list. I said I was looking for three private coaching clients. Once those spots filled, the price was going up. Discovery calls were only available the first week of June.
I got five discovery calls booked. That literally never happens. I'll share more about what happened with those in the June income report, but I'll tell you this: I'm onboarding some incredible clients and I'm so excited about the work we're going to do together.
That one email, after a month of no new sales, reminded me of something I talk about a lot inside the Web Designer Academy. Marketing isn't about doing more. It's about being willing to ask – clearly, directly, without apology. And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is just… send the email.
What This Means for the Web Designer Academy
Very transparently, if I'm pouring time, energy, and money into promoting the Web Designer Academy and it's not generating the enrollments and revenue to sustain those resources, I get to redirect those resources.
That doesn't mean the Web Designer Academy is going anywhere – it's not.
But it does mean I'm giving myself permission for it to look different, and to invest in other things that are responding, like the Package Matrix™ Method, Next Level Mastermind private coaching, and the certification program.
For the women who are already inside the Web Designer Academy and the Next Level Mastermind, nothing changes. You're exactly where you need to be and I'm still fully committed to your results.
And if you've been sitting on the sidelines wondering if now is the right time to join the Web Designer Academy… I'm going to tell you the same thing I tell my students: there is no perfect time. Life will always be life. But every month you wait to make changes in your business is a month you delay the results you want.
