Why So Many Web Designers Are Introverts

So many of us want to build websites for a living because we love building websites. We get to hide behind our laptop, we get to be by ourselves. We get to be creative, and we get to work solo. We get to do our thing, by ourselves.

In the beginning of my web design business, I did everything by myself.  I was like, “I blaze my own trail, get out of my way. I don't need help.  I got this. I can do it all on my own”.

Up until recently that was just how I was! And a lot of web designers are like that too. We wanna figure everything out on our own. We're introverts. We don't really want to ask for help. We’re afraid to really put ourselves out there and OWN our incredible skill and talent.

Going It Alone Slows Down Your Success

The only problem is… going it alone is the loooooong way to go. It makes the journey to a full-time income take so much longer.

When you don't put yourself in a community of people who are just like you and want nothing more than to help you and want to see you succeed, you're taking the long way!

So as web designers, when we’re being loners and we're doing our thing and figuring everything out on our own, it’s a TON of pressure that we put on ourselves, and so we have this tendency to just retreat and hide and not market ourselves or ask for help or be a part of a group of people who really want to see us succeed.

You’re Not Too Introverted to Market Your Business

One way that you can let being introverted get in the way of creating a full-time income in your web design business is when you're not willing to let people help you!

But I can promise you that you are not too introverted to market your web design business, because all the things that you probably think you gotta do to market it are NOT things that you actually have to do.

No, You Don’t Need to Be on Social Media

So many people say to me, “Do I have to be on social media to market my web design business? Do I have to be on Facebook? I hate Facebook. I don't want to be on Facebook. Do I have to build an Instagram following?”

If you like creating content for Instagram, if you like being on Facebook, that’s great, go do it! It’s not like it won’t help you, but it’s not the end-all be-all and there are way faster, less time-intensive ways to get clients!

I marketed and built my business for six years without relying on social media. I do use social media, but in a really strategic way.

I don’t use it to build an audience so that I can entertain people. I use it to connect with people who serve the audience that I already serve, or connect directly with potential clients.

Simple Conversations Can Lead to Clients

So, if you're introverted and you don’t want to put myself out there on social media, the good news is that you don't have to do any of that stuff to get clients. All you have to do is be a real person and be helpful and figure out who it is that you want to help, how you want to help them, go talk to them, listen to their problems, and explain to them how you can actually help them. And then say, “I would love to help you if that is something that you would like help with”.  Just put it out there! And that's literally all you have to do.

Exactly What to Say (Even If You’re Shy)

If you’re introverted, even doing something that simple can be totally nerve-wracking, and that’s why we actually have a whole entire system that we teach inside of our Web Designer Academy where we give you the exact words to say in every single marketing and client situation.

After my freshman year of college, I worked at a law firm for a summer as the receptionist… and I was the worst receptionist in the whole wide world! I was afraid to talk on the phone!! I was so shy and so introverted. I mean, I wouldn't even call to order pizza because I didn’t know what they're going to say. I’d think things like “What if they ask me something that I don't know how to answer? What if I don't know what they're going to ask me? I don't know how to use this phone system, what if I hang up on someone?” I had such bad anxiety every time the phone rang, and probably the only reason I didn’t get fired is that my mom worked there too.

I understand the anxiety that we feel when we are not in control of situations as introverts. That’s why everything that I do inside the Web Designer Academy is designed to tell you the exact words to say in this situation!
