This Week's Questions

Summary + Transcript

Meeting Notes

  • Welcome to the Web Design Academy. 0:30
    • Welcome to the web designer academy. Madison is from Massachusetts and is a part-time web designer and graphic designer.
    • There is no such thing as a small win, no one is too small.
    • Erica and Shannon talk about the new team meeting and how it is the first time they have seen each other in the same room.
    • Shannon shares some announcements.
  • Clarity and confidence in your business. 5:02
    • Caitlin completed her first round of client outreach emails this week, received a knock, but super happy with how everything went.
    • Madison joined the web designer academy and started on some of the first modules, and is already getting through stuff in here on Tuesday.
    • Diana has a concept for tomorrow. She wants to invite everyone to take a look at her consultations and give her some feedback.
    • Diana was on a call with one of her coaches and someone else was getting coached about sales calls and consultations.
  • What do you do when a client wants something done their way? 9:54
    • People pre-submit their questions through the question form that Erica sends out every Monday or in the web designer academy dashboard.
    • The first question today is from Brittany.
    • Brittany asks what to do when a client wants something done to their website that she knows isn't a good strategy in the past.
    • One client in particular doesn't listen to Brittany's suggestions and her site is not a good reflection of the work she does.
  • Tying feedback to the client's goals. 14:10
    • One of the little things over the years, the one that bothers her the most is the special events page for her massage therapist client.
    • Tying it back to their goals, and ultimately letting them make the decision right, and then you ultimately get to decide.
    • One person is taking feedback the other person is not. One person is confused, but won't listen to the suggestion, and the other is ghosted until she brings it up again.
    • There's a concern that your reputation is being damaged by this thing being confusing to others.
  • How to get referrals from your client? 19:33
    • Brittany will share her posts and talk to a lot of other business owners, but none of those business owners have ever connected with her.
    • One strategy is to ask her to test for 30 days changing the page name and see what happens if she says no.
    • The first place to go is that the client did something wrong, which in turn led to the chain of events and dominoes that ended up causing x-yz to happen or not happen.
    • The speaker wants to untie the referrals from the frustration of the client not taking suggestions seriously.
    • Consider reevaluating how you want to move forward with this client, and question the story that you're telling yourself that she's harming your reputation.
    • One of the most difficult clients.
  • Do you still present the package matrix or not? 27:49
    • Angelica had a client like that once years ago and she stopped working with her, and it was one of the most liberating things she's done.
    • Ruby from ruby.
    • The package matrix strategy is more than just pricing and positioning. It is positioning, positioning the middle package as the option, not the best option, but the option that sets boundaries.
    • It is important for people to see what they are not getting when they choose an option.
  • Making adjustments to your package. 32:10
    • In her high-end package, she'll interview you and write all the copy. She'll make an adjustment to that line item of her package.
    • In the mid-level, she will provide you with all of the copy, but she won't need a lot of concepts and a mood board.
    • The mid level is perfect for you if statement at the top of the package. At the mid level, the client can have the option to have you swoop in and do it all for her.
    • The client is an investment-minded client. She could make the investment back in less than a month.
  • Pricing an ecommerce add-on for a booking form. 37:38
    • There is no rule of thumb for pricing for an e-commerce add-on on the same client/project.
    • There is a question about pricing for a booking form with payment integration. Is it recommended to charge a certain percentage of the base package price.
    • At the high end, there is a lot of scope creep. There is also scope creep at the mid-level.
    • There are some scope creepy things that he anticipates with her that he would be able to add on to functionality and add on functionality and then ads.
  • How to structure your package for your client? 43:01
    • How to structure a $20,000 high-end package for a project that starts in the next few weeks.
    • Ruby has two ways to think about this. One way is to take things off of the client's plate, and the other is to have other levers in place.
    • Customize the high-end package to get the client from where they are to booking that client as quickly as possible.
    • All of us have asked this question at least once or twice, and it's an option that could serve the client or make things more frictionless.
    • How the client has taken over the business in the past and caused them to drop other things, and setting boundaries around that.
    • The newbies are go getters and amazing.

Yes! Ongoing I'm sure haha
00:05:45 Stephani – The Simple Growth Co: I quoted a project that was a bit tedious, so I priced to make it worth my while (and that I thought was fair). The client said they couldn't justify the price. But I was totally fine with that (did not take it personally! #win) and felt totally good with it. But I also told her that if she started it herself and realized she didn't want to deal with it, that I was here. πŸ˜‰
